Ways to Celebrate Earth Day, Every Day

Tomorrow is Earth Day – one of our favorite days of the year! It’s a day to express appreciation for this world and serve as good stewards for its preservation.

So how can you join in the festivities? Get out and participate in a volunteer event tomorrow, as part of the ODOT TRASH-OFF and Great American Cleanup! You can find a list of events here.

Want to put your appreciation of the earth into action? Below are some easy steps to living more sustainably, reducing your carbon footprint, and loving the earth, every day.

Switch to a clean power choice program or energy saving program. Check with your energy services provider to see if they offer any sustainable energy programs.

Commit to using reusable products. Do away with plastic bottles and get a reusable bottle to fill up instead. Say bye-bye to ziplock bags and get reusable containers. Paper or plastic? How about neither! Use reusable bags rather than choosing between paper and plastic. Check out this tutorial to make your own out of an old t-shirt. Going to a cookout or event with a meal? Bring reusable, portable utensils and dinnerware – avoid disposable items! Skip the paper towels and switch to reusable cloths.

Shop in style and shop local! Your local economy and the environment will love you for it.

Drive green, drive less. Carpool, bike, walk, combine trips – all great alternatives to excessive carbon emissions from your vehicle. If possible, commit to seeking out more energy-efficient vehicles.

Have a green household. Turn off and unplug appliances and lights when not being used. Hang clothes instead of using your dryer. Replace your light bulbs with more energy-efficient versions. Recycle in your home! Find out more about recycling here.

Test out your green thumb. Try planting veggies, herbs, and fruits to supplement your produce intake. You don’t have to have acres of land to get green. You could even pursue creating or participating in a community garden.

Someone’s “trash” is another person’s treasure. Buy second hand and donate items you no longer need. Thrift stores and eBay can be great for sustainable, environmentally-friendly shopping.

Renew your appreciate for nature and visit a state park. Find one near you here.

Become a minimalist. Use. Less. Stuff.

Share your appreciation of this earth and educate others! Tell others why you love this earth and why we ALL should be working to preserve its beauty.
